GBDC designed new mechanical and electrical systems for a complete refurbishment of three lecture theatres, plus corridors, classrooms and a boardroom at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus. The full refurbishment took place over the summer closure and detailed designs were produced on a tight timescale during the pre-construction phase of the contract.
Working with Beacon Group as part of a design and build project, engineers from GBDC designed air conditioning, lighting, audio visual (AV) installations, power, emergency lighting, fire alarms and smoke extraction.
The dated lecture theatres were fitted out with new seating, LED lighting with Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) controls, Wi-Fi equipment, USB ports for each seat and new air conditioning to improve the ambience of the space.
A new Air Handling Unit (AHU) with heat recovery systems was installed on the roof of the building to work in conjunction with a new chiller. Outputs were designed to integrate with existing ducting whilst keeping noise below specified limits. A new Building Management System (BMS) was also installed to optimise efficiency and performance.
The project includes testing of existing equipment, design and updating drawings, commissioning and provision of O&M manuals.
Frazer Larrassey, Director of Beacon Group commented, “The engineers at Green Building Design Consultants were proactive in designing some very cost effective solutions. I would not hesitate to recommend them to work on other design and build projects.”
