Sir John Soane, the architect of the Bank of England, negotiated an Act of Parliament in 1833 to preserve his house and private collection in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

Working with Julian Harrap Architects in this Grade I listed museum, Green Building Design Consultants have designed a conservation heating system to limit humidity and conserve the building’s fabric, decoration and exhibits. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the adaptations to the existing heating system were part of a £7m refurbishment project to create a new shop, gallery and event space.

The main challenge was to design and install a system without damaging any of the period decoration or finishes. This was achieved by carefully surveying pipework routes, assessing the condition of existing equipment and installing a wireless control system. Pipework was modified for low pressure hot water central heating, with new controls activated by humidity sensors.
