Project Profile
Working with Jarvis Contracting and E7 mechanical and electrical contractors for Quantum Care, GBD developed cost-effective, energy efficient designs for this design & build project for Anson Court, a new, 76 bedroom dementia care home in Bericot Way, Welwyn Garden City.
A combined heat and power (CHP) boiler generates electricity as well as hot water. An air source heat pump provides heating and cooling to communal areas. For maximum efficiency during colder months, radiators with individual room controls are supplied by a low-pressure hot water (LPHW) heating system to maintain a base temperature, with separate gas fired high-efficiency boilers supporting peaks of demand.
Heat recovery mechanical ventilation systems were also installed in all bedrooms and circulation areas, linked to a central Building Management System (BMS).
Calculations of the predicted electrical load of the building enabled the main and sub-main cabling to the hospice to be sized correctly. Using the Dialux package, a detailed energy and efficient lighting design and mock ups of the final appearance were delivered.
Key Features
Quantum Care specified a BREEAM Excellent rating.
High levels of insulation, brise soleils and Thermowood boarding.
Green roofs with Photovoltaic (PV) panels, rainwater attenuation, a plug-and-charge scooter store and a car park with sustainable drainage
Bryan Burgess, Technical Pre Construction Manager from Jarvis Contracting said, “Green Building Design Consultants integrated several systems with the BMS to keep energy wastage to a minimum. Their input to the team was highly valued and designs were very cost effective.”
